Clinical Swallowing Assessment and Treatment

Standardized assessments for dysphagia help evaluate swallowing function and identify risks of aspiration. Common assessments include the Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS), which uses X-ray imaging to track how food and liquid move through the mouth and throat, and the Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES), which provides a direct view of the swallowing process using a small camera inserted through the nose. Clinical bedside swallowing evaluations, conducted by a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), assess muscle strength, coordination, and safety during oral intake.

Dysphagia symptoms can vary but often include coughing or throat clearing during or after eating, a wet or gurgly-sounding voice, difficulty chewing or swallowing, and food or liquid leaking from the mouth. Other signs include recurring pneumonia, unexplained weight loss, or dehydration due to difficulty consuming enough food or liquids. If left untreated, dysphagia can lead to serious complications, including malnutrition and aspiration pneumonia.

While some cases of dysphagia can be improved or resolved with therapy, the outcome depends on the underlying cause. Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) use compensatory techniques and swallowing exercises to strengthen muscles, improve coordination, and enhance safety during eating. In some cases, medical interventions such as surgery or feeding tube placement may be necessary. Early assessment and individualized therapy can significantly improve swallowing function and quality of life.
